Display of cross leads to disciplinary action

18 April 2011

In a fresh twist on the familiar theme of whether Christians have the right to display a cross, an employee allegedly faces disciplinary action for having a palm cross on show in his company van.

Aptly timed to coincide with Palm Sunday, another account of Christianity being 'marginalised' by equality legislation received widespread media coverage yesterday.

According to the Daily Mail, an electrician working for Wakefield and District Housing is facing disciplinary action for refusing to comply with a policy which bans the display of personal effects in company vehicles.

The organisation’s executive director of people is reported to have said: ‘It is not about religion – it’s simply about employees not displaying personal items in company vehicles. WDH expects all its employees to have regard to the Equality Act 2010.

‘It is permissible for WDH employees to display, within the spirit of the Act, religious artefacts and other personal possessions on their desks and themselves.’
